ROTOMETALS AND THE RETURN OF PEWTER WIRE

ROTOMETALS AND THE RETURN OF PEWTER WIRE

Some products sell themselves.

Pewter wire isn't one of them.

In fact, the first challenge is convincing people it even exists.

Most metal suppliers carry the usual suspects. Copper wire. Brass wire. Aluminum wire. Maybe a few specialty alloys if you're lucky. Ask for pewter wire and you'll usually get a pause on the other end of the line.

The truth is that pewter wire has become something of a rarity. Not because pewter disappeared. The alloy has been around for centuries and remains popular with artists, jewelers, and craftspeople. What's become uncommon is finding someone willing to produce it in wire form.

That's where we come in.

At Rotometals, we've never been particularly interested in carrying only what everyone else carries. Some of our favorite products are the ones that make customers stop and say, "Wait, you actually stock that?"

Pewter wire is one of those products.

For artists, the appeal is obvious the moment they pick it up. It doesn't look quite like silver. It doesn't look quite like aluminum. It has its own character. A soft, bright metallic appearance that's difficult to describe until you see it in person. The kind of material that sparks ideas simply because it isn't something people encounter every day.

Jewelry makers are often drawn to it for the same reason. In a world full of familiar materials, pewter offers something different. A finished piece immediately stands apart because most people have never seen jewelry made from pewter wire before.

Of course, appearance is only part of the story.

Our pewter wire is made from an alloy containing 89% tin, 7.5% antimony, and 3.5% copper. The antimony and copper help strengthen the alloy while maintaining the distinctive look that has made pewter a favorite material for generations of craftsmen.

What makes us especially proud of this product is that it would be easy not to make it.

The demand isn't massive. It isn't a commodity product. You won't find it hanging on the shelf of every craft store in America. Yet every year we hear from artists, sculptors, jewelers, and makers who have been searching for pewter wire and can't find it anywhere.

When that happens, we're reminded of why we continue producing specialty metals.

Sometimes a material deserves to exist simply because creative people still have ideas for it.

Today we offer our pewter wire in a 7/32" diameter and sell it by the pound with no minimum order. Need something different? Reach out to sales@rotometals.com and let us know what diameter you're looking for. If we can make it happen, we'll do our best to help.

After all, keeping unusual metals available is what Rotometals has been doing since 1939. And as long as there are artists looking for materials that no one else seems to offer, we'll keep finding reasons to make them.
