Description

The 5 lb. Lead Wool is used to seal hubbed cast iron pipe fittings. Lead wool is used in lieu of molten lead.

Highlights

  • 5 lb. box
  • Primarily used with hubbed cast iron pipe fittings
  • Easier to use instead of molten lead
  • Creates seal when used with oakum
  • Used For Packing Cast Iron Hubbed Joints
  • A form of caulking lead, is long fine strands of chemical grade lead which is twisted into 5/8"rope for use in various applications
  • It averages about 2 1/2 ft. to one pound
  • Be certified to meet Federal Specification QQ-C-40

Lead wool does not have a defined shelf life, and it does not require a specific storage temperature. As a metallic product, it is chemically stable under normal conditions. The main concern is preventing contamination, oxidation, or physical degradation (like clumping or crushing), rather than expiration.

Details

  • Shelf Life: Lead wool is essentially strands of pure lead. Unlike organic or chemical products, it does not degrade over time in the same way. As long as it is kept clean and dry, it can be stored indefinitely without losing its effectiveness for caulking, sealing, or shielding applications.

  • Storage Temperature: There is no strict temperature requirement. Lead wool should be stored at ambient room temperature. Extreme heat could soften or deform it, but this would require temperatures approaching lead’s melting point (621°F / 327°C), which is far beyond normal storage conditions.

  • Best Practices for Storage:

    • Keep in a cool, dry place to avoid surface oxidation.

    • Store in sealed containers or bags to prevent dust contamination.

    • Avoid direct contact with acids or corrosive chemicals.

    • Handle with gloves to minimize exposure to lead dust.

⚠️ Safety Note

While lead wool itself is stable, lead is toxic. Always store it away from food areas, use protective gloves when handling, and wash hands thoroughly afterward. If you’re keeping it for long‑term industrial or construction use, sealed packaging is the best way to ensure it remains clean and safe to handle.
