I don't fool around with scrap lead for muzzle loading competition.  99.9% pure lead to my door with Rotometals.

Sand n Dross, BUT... October 7, 2013
Reviewer: bolt-action from Granada Hills, CA United States
I purchased three 5# lead ingots (99.9%). I wanted to try out Rotometals' lead for the first time.

I took 5# (+/- 0.25#) and when all was cast and cooled I found myself with a fine batch of 138gr 0.451" lead balls. Off to the side I had a pile of dross, which happened to contain a noticeable amount of dirt/sand. This was peculiar because the lead is advertised as 99.9%. However, as my results were good in my casting, I didn't mind it so much. I estimated that the amount of dross removed was about 1/3#, maybe a little more or a little less due to the 5# ingot's +/-0.25# tolerance.

Either way, 237 lead balls at 138gr each yields 4 2/3# (4.67lbs).

I say, a little dirt/sand is easily disregarded if you come up with a good batch nonetheless.
